Send in a picture and it can be 3D printed -jewlery

Interested in the whole 3D Printing of jewelery I found another website that 3D prints jewelery. Difference with this site is that you don't do any of the work. All you have to do is send in a picture of the piece of jewlery you would like. Then they print it for you! This website is awesome if your not so tech savey and want to a 3D printed jewlery piece. Or if you found a piece of jewley that you like and have a picture but can't find it in stores.
heres the link I encourage you all to check it out:

3D printed Jewlery!

While searching on the i.Materialise website I found another awesome 3D printing website. As you can probably guess from the title of this post this website allows you to 3D print jewelery!
On this site you can either customize a word ring or create your very own. You can also view and or purchase what other users have created. You can choose from a variety of options in sizing and materials. I thought this site was pretty cool because it starts you off with the basic ring and already has the sizes for you so you wouldn't have to figure it out the way you would if you were making a ring on a site such as tinkercad. The site displays many awesome cool and beautiful designs that are all inspirational.

Heres the link :]

Print.Order.Share - Your tinkercad creations

So on my extensive journey to find out more about tinkercad I have found yet another awesome and useful site.  i.Materialize is a website in which you can take your tinkercad creation upload it to the site and order your own print of your 3D object. The cool thing about ordering from this site is that you can choose from a wide range of materials, colors and scales to print your design. You also have the opportunity to sell or purchase 3D Objects from and to other users of the site. If you don't want to buy anything or sell you can also look at the many examples of different creations for inspirations.
The site also has links to other sides just like tinekercad that you can use. There is also a blog and a forum on this site for you to interact with other users.
Here is the link to the awesome site:

Alternatives to tinkercad

Having a new found interest in tinkercad and searching the web to find information about this site I came across something I'm very excited to share about. I found a website with a whole page dedicated to Alternatives to tinkercad. It literally lists so many different programs and sites that are similar to tinkercad. Included on this list are Sketchup, NanoCAD, LibreCAD and so much more.
So if you really enjoy tinkercad or like the idea of it but not the website heres the link to an awesome site called AlternativeTo that can help your craving for more:
http://alternativeto.net/software/tinkercad-com/

AlternativeTo is a site that gives you  millions of different alternatives to popular software, programs, etc. Its a very interesting site and I highly recommend take a look at it.

Another helpful tool to understanding tinkercad

Well since first using tinkercad I have become quite interested in this website. To even better my understanding of the site I searched again for a helpful tutorial on how to use the site.
I came across another great resource to help me better understand the site. This tutorial also teaches you how to create a really cool star ship.

Here is a link to the tutorial:
http://teambudmen.com/tinkercad.html

This tutorial is different than the last I shared in that it is not a video. It is a written tutorial with step by step instructions and pictures for a visual reference. So if you learn better with a written tutorial these will be super helpful.
Here is an image of the really cool star ship this tutorial teaches you how to create:

A helpful tinkercad tutorial

Recently I have been introduced to the website: Tinkercad. Tinkercad allows you to create 3D models in which you are able to 3D print. If you have access to a 3D printer you can create it yourself. If not you can order a 3D print of your model. This website allows you to save your model in .STL, .OBJ, .X3Dcolors, and .VRML colors file. Which is helpful when using different printers.

In order to better understand how to use this website I searched for helpful tutorials.
here is a tutorial I found extremely useful.
This youtube video can teach you how to:
-group
-copy
-move objects
-create work planes
-rotate
and more!

Tinkercad Tutorial: How to create a boat :]

Searching the web for ideas on what I could make on tinker cad I came across lots of boat images. From the looks of the images creating a boat seemed pretty simple so I decided to try it myself.

If you are not familiar with tinkercad I will be posting helpful links (in another post) to tutorials that have personally helped me when learning how to use this site.

If any one would like to make their own boat on Tinkercad here is how you do it:
*Note: these are just basic instructions, as far as size you may make the pieces and the boat itself any size you like. Also feel free to add your own personal touch :]

1) First we are going to build the base of the boat. Drag a box shape to the working plane
2) Find the top marking point on top of the box (Not the arrow). Click and hold this point and drag it down to shorten the height of the box.
3) Notice the corner points on each corner of the box. Hold down one of these and pull on it to extend the length and width of the box.
4) Next drag a roof shape to the working plane.
5) Use the arrows shown on bottom corners of the roof shape to rotate it so that the shorter side is next to the short side of the box.
6) Notice that there are also arrows on the top side of the roof shape. Press and hold this arrow to rotate the shape 90 degrees. You want the flat side to connect to the short end of the box.
7) At the moment your roof shape is probably partially through the plane. To fix this find the arrow at the top of the roof shape. Hold it down and bring it up. This should make the roof shape rise up. Align it so that it is flat on the plane.
8) Now you are going to want the roof shape to be the same height as the box. To do this find the top marking point on top of the roof shape. Click and hold this down while dragging the roof shape down so that it is at even height with the box shape.
9) Hold the shift key down and click both the box shape and the roof shape. When you do this you are now able to adjust the size of the base of the boat (which you have just created) as a whole.
10) Now to build the next layer of the boat. Drag a new work plane to the flat top surface of the base of the boat.
11) Drag a new box shape to the new work plane. Drop it directly above the base of the boat. Make this any size you want. (This will be the body of the boat).
12) Now time to build the smoke chimneys. Drag another work plan on  top of the boats body.
13) Drag a cylinder shape onto the new plane. Then move it to the top of the boats body.
(the same rules apply if you would like to make the cylinder taller or wider or longer. The choice is up to you)
14) If you would like to make multiple chimneys all you have to do is simply copy and paste the current cylinder you created. If you are using a mac you can also hold down the command button and the C button at the same time then click the cylinder (This will copy the cylinder). Then hold down the command button at the same time as the V button (This will paste a new cylinder).
15) Your boat is complete! however why not decorate it? To decorate the boat drag a work plane to the side of the boat. Then search the many fun shapes tinkercad has to offer and make it your own :)

Here is a picture of my boat for a visual:

Hope this was helpful and have fun creating your own little boat :]

A New approach to this asset mapping project

While walking around campus I see tons of flyers on the numerous bulletin boards on campus. I do actually read these posts when I get the chance and I know I am not the only one who does. Keeping my current asset mapping project in mind I realized that these boards display our campuses diversity everyday. There are tons of flyers on the many diverse clubs we have. Not only diverse racially but sexually and many other diverse offerings there are on this campus. So why not map these boards. That way people can find these boards and take a look for themselves at what this campus has to offer.

Along with this idea came an idea for an intervention. Since many people read these boards everyday why not grab their attention. My idea for an intervention was to create a huge poster that had the hashtag Diversity at suny new paltz for twitter and instagram and the name of a Facebook page we would create to spread awareness of the diversity on our campus positively.

What Am I Asset Mapping?

Our group has asset mapped certain places and associations that contribute to our SUNY New Paltz college campus spread of diversity. We interviewed our colleges media manager and learned that the media clubs at our school have a great impact on diversity. Not only are its members diverse, but they do display a range of diverse topics. The radio station has covered recent racist incidents and  precautions being in place to take care of the situation and prevent it in the future. The TV station on campus has its own Spanish channel which is a great asset to the many Spanish speaking students. They also cover world news that talk about diversity as well as covering the many diverse clubs we have on campus.

Here is the link to our campus's TV Station website -WNPC:

Below is also a video from WNPC Eye on New Paltz news that relates to diversity when talking about the Asian film festival on campus

Beginning Asset Mapping

At first Asset Mapping was a confusing concept to grasp. As well as a bit confusing on how to go about it. In short asset mapping is about mapping assets. The confusion comes in when you are thinking of how to organize and create the project.

Here is a helpful link that helped me to better understand asset mapping:
http://www.abcdinstitute.org/docs/Diane%20Dorfman-Mapping-Community-Assets-WorkBook%281%29-1.pdf

This workbook not only helps to explain but also has you interact by answering questions.
Its a good start to understanding just what asset mapping is.

Dr. Seuss's book One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish is a favorite book for a lot of children and adults.
Its a fun rhyming book that is easy to read for beginners and helps with colors, association, numbers and rhyming. I chose to create a scene from this book in my box because as a future educator I believe this book is a great tool to teach young students. The colors and excitement in this book captures their attention. I chose to create 3 fish. Each that follow the descriptions of the fish in the first couple of pages. The child then can light up the appropriate fish when mentioned.

With Scratch you can pretty much create anything you imagine.
Including making a dance scene!
The Scratch video "Penguin Party" was just so cute and adorable that it inspired me to learn how to make my own creations dance as well.

Gaze : A psychological reflection on womens beauty

From my understanding the concept of the gaze is the psychological comparison between who is doing the looking and what they see verses what other people see, which can be completely different.
I find this common in todays magazines about women and women beauty. Women are constantly wanting other features that other women may have. What they don't realize is that those other women might want their features. Magazines are constantly telling women how to look a different way instead of loving what they already have.

Many women want to look like the women they see in magazines. What they don't realize is that those women don't actually look like that. Their pictures have been altered with applications such as Photoshop to create an unrealistic image of beauty. So they're seeing a false image of beauty, comparing themselves to it and pressuring themselves to look like this false image. Not realizing the beauty that other people see in them. Just concerned of what their false ideal of beauty is.

http://www.cnn.com/2011/OPINION/08/08/swinson.airbrushing.ads/

 http://parenting.blogs.nytimes.com/2011/05/17/what-your-teens-are-reading/?_php=true&_type=blogs&_r=0

Heres another example
Teens always want to look older and older women want to look younger.
Why can't they love being their own age? Probably because the women their age in magazines have been altered to look different. Young teenagers will have makeup and thinner faces that are altered and older women in magazines wont have wrinkles gray or gray hair.

http://www.wikihow.com/Look-Older-As-a-Teen

http://www.wikihow.com/Look-Younger-and-Feel-Better

Instead of always seeing beauty that we don't have. All women should learn to love the beauty they do have that other women envy. Remember all the magazine images of beauty ... aren't real!

I've posted earlier about the gaze and used women's ideal image of beauty as an example.
I had mentioned that the images of women on magazines is false due to the changes made by programs such as Photoshop. The same techniques that can make you look beautiful can also make you look like an awesome zombie from a movie. Think about it.

Here is how its done! The magic of creating a beautiful fake person!

http://www.appsheriff.com/tutorials/13-glamorous-photoshop-techniques-for-extreme-facial-makeover/

http://www.photoshoplady.com/tutorial/beautify-and-retouch-a-lady-image-in-photoshop/5683

I hope that who ever reads this will use the information provided to understand that those women in the magazines don't have smooth radiant skin. They most likely have wrinkles, dark spots, dark under eye circles from a busy schedule with no sleep, even a pimple or two. You don't have to edit your picture like this to be beautiful. Just love what you have.

I myself like make up and have fun playing around with it. So I'm not saying that using make up and the way you like to look is not ok. Go ahead have fun, use make up to enhance the beautiful features you already have. Just don't look at a magazine and expect to look like that.. its fake! Be you.

Remixed ruined for money

Remixing comes naturally since it can be argued that we all base art work off of what we've seen before. Which in this case means everything is some sort of remix. I don't believe that someone should steal someones work and call it their own. I will how ever argue if an artist uses a small amount of information in their own and uses it in different context that, remixed art work should not be penalized.
Why has remixing become such a problem if its something that comes naturally?
I understand artist being upset that their hard work has been taken and someone is taking all the credit for it... that is unfair.
However when big companies try to claim remixed art work as their own, I don't sympathize for them. The artist in the company can be upset because it was their hard work however all the company wants is claim over the remix so that they can make money off of it in some way.

Here is an article in NY TIMES that talks about this issue:

http://www.nytimes.com/2008/08/16/technology/16tube.html?_r=1&

If you read the letter carefully you notice that it says "In some cases, ads may appear next to it."
If this content was owned by lionsgate and they really had a problem they should just take it down not leave it up only if they can put ads on it to make money. It just shows that all they care about is making money off of it. Not that they're upset about someone stealing their images.

Remixing laws should be put in place to protect the right of the owner. Not to make money off of.
